Q: What constitutes an editorial shot or fashion?
For the purpose of this discussion, the terms "fashion" and "editorial" can be used interchangeably. Fashion is about selling clothes and cosmetics and related things. It's about wearing clothes with an attitude. In fashion, anything goes. It's a picture that makes people stop on a page and notice.
Q: Is there much fashion work in the Washington area?
A: Currently, big things are not going to happen fashionwise in the D.C. area to the extent they would in New York. In New York, models might be seen by a big name advertiser who wants to put them in their fall line or use them to promote a new look. That's probably not going to happen here, but it's certainly legitimate to do photographs here to market elsewhere. Some local agencies handle fashion work or market to other areas. Local fashion work doesn't pay as well as it would in large fashion centers.
Washington is, however, an international city. I covered fashion shows when YSL was making its first time American showing of clothes initially shown in Paris here. Washington may not replace New York or Paris, but it may become a more pro editorial market.
In an article written about me in a book by GVpedia on fashion, there is a quote by Yves Saint Laurent, "Fashions fade, style is eternal." Successful fashion designers and fashion photographers have a sense of style that transcends momentary trends in fashion. One of my fashion shots used in that article is eleven years old. It still holds up.
